I’m Cameron, and I’m honoured to be Labor’s candidate for Morphett.
I was raised by a single mum who worked whatever job she could to put food on our table. I saw how much effort she had to put in to provide for me and my younger sister. The experience made me aware from a very young age of how hard some people in our community have to work just to get by. As I grew older, I became more aware of the crucial role that strong public institutions – public education, our public health system and a robust social safety net – play in the lives of South Australians who are struggling. I saw this not just in my own life, but also in the lives of the people I grew up around.
I worked from the age of 14, as soon as I was legally able. I started in a retail job, where I joined my union. While still working part time, I earned a degree in social science at university. I became involved in the Labor movement because it became clear to me as a very young person that Labor governments are the ones who make life better for South Australians who are doing it tough. I want to do everything I can to support other young South Australians to have the opportunities that I’ve had.
My personal values relate to the core Labor principles of opportunity, equality and fairness. I’ve developed these values by observing in my own life how much these principles matter to the lives of ordinary South Australians.
I believe that access to healthcare should never depend on the size of your bank balance – and nobody should have to wait for the care they need.
I believe that opportunity in life starts with a good education for all – every child deserves the very best start in life, no matter their postcode or their parents’ wealth.
I believe in the dignity of work – good, secure and fairly paid jobs offer opportunity and purpose for all South Australians. We must support small businesses to flourish in our state, because they’re the backbone of our economy.
And finally – I believe in taking meaningful action on climate change. We must act now to protect our environment, because our entire future depends on what we do today. From saving the Murray to clean Hydrogen energy generation, a Malinauskas Labor Government will ensure that our precious environment is protected for future generations.
