Katherine works at the local community justice centre and is a Girl Guide Leader for the area. As a lawyer at the community justice centre, Katherine sees clients struggling with living away from the city hub of Adelaide because so many support services in Mount Gambier lack consistent and ongoing funding.
Last year Katherine experience first-hand the crisis in country health. Katherine had to go to hospital after breaking her wrist. The hospital was packed as unfortunately there was no doctor at the Naracoorte Hospital and the ‘overflow’ was coming to Mount Gambier Hospital. She had days of waiting for surgery because the lack of availability of specialists in Mount Gambier. Katherine ended up having to head to Adelaide for surgery and specialist follow up appointments on her wrist.
Stories of taking two days off work to drive to Adelaide for a 10-minute specialist appointment are not uncommon. That is why Katherine will be campaigning to elect a Malinauskas Labor Government that has committed $100 million to country health and hospitals, instead of proceeding with Steven Marshall’s $662 million CBD basketball stadium.
